Organic Elegance

Organic is a trend all it’s own, but what the sustainable trend really needs is to do simply that, sustain. It needs to break out of the “simple” style and go for bold, evening and business wear. It needs to follow the styles of the bigger design stars and open their minds to using more eco-friendly fabrics. One of my professors is pushing her classes to look to organic and recycled fabric to make their designs with. We participated in the Red Carpet Green Dress competition that Suzy Amis held.

We studied a variety of ways to design sustainable dresses: no waste pattern making, organic materials, transformable designs, and natural dye. I was particularly inspired by the natural dye idea since most people don’t realize the amount of harmful chemicals that are used in the process. I decided to design a dress out of organic silk satin, use the extra material for a flower like one shoulder strap. The dress is an evening dress but could easily be tailored after the red carpet event into a cute cocktail dress and jacket or shawl with the fabric from the bottom of the evening gown. The catch to this dress is to dye it with organic tea. Organic berry teas would be used to make the pinkish colored strap and citrus teas would be used to dye the cream color. I also used tea to paint my original illustration.

This was an exciting and challenging project, one that will stay with me through my design career. It is important to look beyond the stylish side of the garment and on to what makes up the fabric.

I recently wrote an article on Rachel Roy, Wyclef Jean and the power of being a conscious consumer.

Haute Coco

The internet really is an amazing thing! I have always been inspired by the beautiful and talented Coco Rocha and had a moment every designer hopes for as they search for inspiration from their muses. I’ve recently  been inspired by muted pastels, the ones with just a touch of grey to them, as well as old English country side and equestrian attire. My search for the perfect title came to an end when I saw this picture of Coco in WWD.

The quote was “Don’t book me if you want plain jane.” and it just clicked. Jane Austen wrote beautiful stories of love and adventure, of strong women and romance. It was perfect. So here’s to you Coco and Jane, may you always inspire for generations to come!

Today the first snow of the season fell, and to start winter off right I spent the day in the knitting lab. I still need to sew the seams, but I am pretty excited about learning how to use the knitting machines!

It's up to you New York, New York

It looks like life is throwing us a curve ball, and I think we can hit a home run from it.

perfect

The past few weeks have been perfect. I don’t want them to stop.
It’s bliss, It’s relaxing, It’s real

so happy together

so happy together

I know reality will hit soon enough, but then soon after that I’ll be out of school and into the real world too. I really can’t wait.

I simply love back to school season and realized this year that the hype and energy I get from the turn of seasons will carry through into work in the years to come. Fall means back to school, it also means fall fashion week. Bring on the layers, great colors and cute coats!

My friends and I have been hard at work making hand outs and a poster for our Student Apparel Design Association. Nothing is more rewarding then meeting the up and coming freshman who are so excited when they are told of where their new peers have interned at, I don’t think eyes could get any wider. It is also exciting to see students come to our table at the big club event and say “this is what I’ve been looking for, you have no idea how excited I am!” The fashion show is going to be better then ever this year.

The past few weeks have been insane!

Quick update

San Francisco- Haight Street was fun, don’t go before noon though because none of the shops are really opened. I bought a BEAUTIFUL silk sari from India for $20. That is 6 yards of silk for an insane deal, I did ask for a discount  because there was a huge hole in it. I’m going to use the fabric for a dress or something. It’s a mix of neutral colors in a paisly pattern, perfect for any season. Britex fabric is also amazing, plan on spending way too much money on the best fabrics around.

Driving up the coast is beautiful! We’ve stopped at lots of beaches. Ruby Creek has been the best so far. We must have seen a million sea stars on the rocks in bright shades of orange, purple and brown as well as other sea critters.

Olympic National Rainforest- My favorite trail has been the Hall of Moss, creepy, beautiful, and the trees are HUGE!

Seattle- We only had a day there but spent out time at great places. The Market was blur of colorful flowers, fruits and fish. It is worth it just to smell the fresh aromas! A must visit for any food lover. I was also very impressed with their zoo. The baby gorilla was my favorite, who can resist something that cute!

I’m exhausted but so happy, this vacation is amazing! More to come later, and pictures too :)

It was exactly how I thought it might be. It was a week long glimpse to what my future could be.

I spent the past 5 days in New York and fell in love with most of it.

Walking around the garment district was exciting, thinking about my creations being sold in Soho or Madison Ave was even more exciting. Browsing through countless little stores and fabric shops made me realize how much more I could do with a better variety of fabric, and expose to the best designs. I tryed to take mental pictures of the finishing techniques and popular styling and fitting lines. I realize I need to push my self with unique style lines, but keep a feminine silhoutte. I need to work on versitility of garments, day to night styles. But I loved it, and I know I could work here.

Much to our shock at 9 am one morning we were kicked out of my friends apartment by her roomate ( a 33 year old, not married, and living in a college like apartment?) We quickly left Brooklyn and went to Wyclefs studio. Nate won a contest to record with THE Wycleaf Jean. More about him in another post, there is just too much to say about that awesome experience. We left our things at Platinum Records and I ventured into the city for some fabric shopping and Nate recorded. Thankfully a friend who is modeling in NYC put us up. We dragged our bags from Times square to Queens, thus ending up a hot sweaty, wet from the rain, and still shocked from the mornings wake up call, mess. But when we walked off the subway and into Astoria I fell in love. Here was the perfect little main street, with a fresh food market that trumped the city stink, well priced as well. There was an all night dinner, cute bars, restaurants, bank, pharmacy, everything a place needs all on one street. We started trucking toward her house in the rain. I just about died when we turned the corner, it was perfect. Two, three story brick homes, white, grey, brown, you name it, with beautiful gardens, elegant metal gates and porches. I didn’t think it could get any better untill I found out how cheap rent was and there is an olympic size public pool, tennis courts and running track right next to the hudson, for free. We spent a lovely night catching up, talking fashion, advertising and modeling. I woke to the cutest little dog licking my face.

I really do think all things happen for a reason, and getting thrown out meant finding the perfect place to live. I could almost smell the ocean there.

The thing I love about the city is there is always something to do, single or in a relationship. Central park is relaxing and beautiful. One could eat at a new restaurant every day. The street vendor food is amazing, lamb and rice, gyros, and lets not forget the fresh produce stands for not much more then in the stores. I love the pride taken in authentic food, the street markets must be insane! When I have an intern someday, I can’t wait to send her on a strawberry or raspberry run, which are just as expensive as a cup of coffee.

The only downsides were all the walking, my feet have never hated me so much! On the positive side you always get a work out before and after work.

The subway, which got better, and let’s face it, unlimited transportation for only $80 a month is better then owning a car which could cost thousands a month between gas burned sitting in traffic and insurance.

The layout was also confusing but that clicks once one lives there after a while.  I love how there are always new places to discover.

So in a year I know where I want to be. A cute house in Astoria with Nate a few blocks away. He can be an advertising and or music man. I’ll design clothes, textiles and art on the side. I can grab fresh veggies for dinner and fruit for breakfast right when I hope off the subway. I’ll have a garden, cheap rent, We’ll grill out and eat at new places all the time.  Pretty much the perfect life.

Hello future, I love you

dear feet, we are going to have to really get some caluses going this year. My whole pinky toe being a blister is just not going to fly.
